Avoid These 5 Smile Wreckers

Posted on April 16, 2021

We hope this post from David Rice DDS in Elgin will alert you to some harmful oral health threats. Too often, we treat tooth decay and damage caused by the following:

  1. Sports Injuries. Nothing can wreck your smile faster than a knocked-out tooth, and playing sports can really put yours at risk. Even sports we think of as non-contact, like basketball, can get you an accidental elbow to the mouth. We’d never say don’t play; it’s too much fun. But always – repeat, always – wear a mouth guard when you play.
  2. Ice Chomping. Who isn’t tempted to crunch that ice at the bottom of your cup? There’s no sugar and no calories, so it may seem harmless enough. But biting down on something hard and frozen can chip or crack one or more teeth.
  3. Too Much Coffee. A lot of people rely on that morning cuppa joe to jump start the day. But coffee is a notorious stainer, and can give your teeth an unsightly brown tint. We’re realistic enough to not recommend giving it up. But try to drink some water afterward to rinse out any residue.
  4. Sticky Candy. First of all, we’ll never say that any candy is okay, since it’s all loaded with cavity-causing sugar. But the stickier the candy, the worse it is for teeth. That’s because, well, it’s sticky, and stays on your teeth a long time. If there’s such a thing as good candy, it’s chocolate. Yes, chocolate! We mean the kind without nuts or a sticky center. It washes off the teeth quickly and easily. (Pro tip: dark chocolate has less sugar than milk chocolate.)
  5. Overbrushing. Yes, it is possible to brush your teeth too much. We recommend brushing twice a day. But we recommend a light touch: brushing harder and longer won’t get your teeth any cleaner, and you really can hurt tooth enamel and your gums. Two minutes is enough. Use a soft-bristle brush and replace it every few months.

At David Rice DDS in Elgin we want you to have the best smile possible, and that means doing everything you can to protect it. People from Bartlet, South Elgin, and Wayne come to our practice for general and implant dentistry, and much more. Call us to schedule your next checkup today!

4 Oral Ailments To Discuss With Your Dentist

Posted on April 9, 2021

Bad Breath Treatment St Charles IL

This article is about some of the most frequent conditions that should be discussed with us, at David Rice DDS in Elgin.

There is a solution for each one of these issues.

  1. Tooth Decay. This is easily the most common dental problem. Tooth decay, or cavities, occur when plaque combines with the sugars and/or starches in food to produce acids that attack tooth enamel. We can always do a drill-and-fill, but prevention via regular brushing and flossing is best.
  2. Dry Mouth. Also known as xerostomia, this lack of saliva is very bothersome and can predispose you to a host of dilemmas such as decay and gum disease. It’s a common side effect of prescription medications, so make sure to bring a list of current prescriptions with you to your appointment.
  3. Jaw Issues. If you suffer from jaw pain or notice a clicking sound, be sure to schedule an appointment with us immediately. These symptoms can be signs of a condition called temporomandibular disorder, or TMD.
  4. Teeth Grinding. If you’ve been stressed out and find that you’ve been grinding your teeth, discuss it with us. An oral appliance can make all the difference.

At David Rice DDS in Elgin, the dental health of our patients is always our top priority. Patients from Bartlet, South Elgin, and Wayne come to our office for dental implants, complete general and family dentistry, and much more. Please call to schedule your next cleaning and checkup with us today!

For A Healthier Smile, Stop Doing This

Posted on April 2, 2021

Elgin friendly family dentist

Your teeth can last a lifetime. With regular checkups at David Rice DDs in Elgin and a few daily precautions, you’ll go a long way toward making sure they do.

If you do any of the following, we recommend that you stop:

Chewing sugared gum all day.
Cavities, a sore jaw, or compromised bridgework may result. If you must chew, select gum with Xylitol.

Drinking soda and energy drinks.
These sugary, acidic beverages are immensely efficient at eroding enamel.

Chewing ice or hard candy.
Your enamel is quite hard. But so are ice and hard candy, and head-to-head, occasionally they win, resulting in a cracked tooth.

Skipping flossing.
Maybe you think brushing is enough. Following brushing with a careful flossing job cleans away fragments of food and plaque between teeth.

Using a firm bristled toothbrush.
A soft bristled brush is the best tool for the job. Save your firm brush for cleaning the grout around your bathtub.

At David Rice DDs in Elgin our general and family dentistry will help keep your teeth and gums in excellent condition. People from Bartlet, South Elgin, and Wayne come to us for regular checkups, restorative dentistry, and much more. Call to schedule an appointment today!

Dental Implants: Mainstream!

Posted on March 26, 2021

In just a few short decades, dental implants have gone from state-of-the-art to mainstream dentistry. Dental implants are available at David Rice DDS in Elgin.

The ever-increasing popularity of dental implants is due to several factors. Chief among these that they are so lifelike. Since they are attached to the jaw, they look and function just like natural teeth.

There is more to it than that, of course. Dental implants help protect and preserve your jawbone, and for the same reason they’re so lifelike: they are attached to the jaw. This simple fact stimulates new bone growth, and prevents any further bone loss.

These are both really great reasons for their popularity. But here’s one more: dental implants can last a lifetime. The key to long implant life is proper care. When we place an implant, we will also provide you with detailed instructions for taking care of it.

At David Rice DDS in Elgin, we have placed dental implants in people from Bartlet, South Elgin, and Wayne, who also come to us for complete cosmetic dentistry services. Call us for an appointment today!

Dental Crowns Solve Dental Dilemmas

Posted on March 19, 2021

Cosmetic Dental Solutions in Elgin

A dental crown is a strong, natural-looking tooth restoration that covers the top of a damaged tooth. At David Rice DDS in Elgin we use dental crowns to solve a number of dental dilemmas.

Crowns can remedy the following issues:

  • A broken tooth with decay
  • An ill-fitting existing crown
  • A decayed tooth that has lost a considerable amount of tooth structure
  • A tooth that has had a root canal
  • A tooth that is too small or misshapen
  • A tooth that causes bite misalignment

Before we can attach the crown, we must prepare the tooth. any decay is removed, and the tooth is shaped  for the ideal fit. Then a mold is taken before a temporary crown is placed. The final, permanent crown is made in a dental lab from the mold.

At David Rice DDS in Elgin dental crowns are a reliable and versatile restoration. We’ve placed them on people from Bartlet, South Elgin, and Wayne, who also come to us for complete cosmetic dentistry services and much more. Call our office to schedule an appointment today!

Help For Nervous Dental Patients At David A. Rice, DDS

Sedation Dentistry in Elgin

Imagine the following: You are stretched out in a dental chair at the start of a checkup. As a dental assistant wraps a paper bib around your neck and clicks on a bright overhead light, you tense up and your heart begins to pound. If this sounds at all like you, sedation dentistry from David Rice DDS in Elgin can help.

Millions of people experience heightened stress levels when they go to the dentist. Sometimes it’s so intense, people skip the dentist altogether. This is a coping mechanism that psychologists call “avoidence.” The problem with it, of course, is that it puts your dental health at risk.

We offer the following types of sedation:

  • Nitrous Oxide. Commonly known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide has been used in dentistry for more than a century. It acts quickly and wears off quickly.
  • Oral Conscious Sedation. You take a prescribed pill an hour or so before your procedure (we’ll have a schedule for you). You stay awake but are greatly relaxed.
  • IV Sedation. As the term suggests, this is administered in the arm. It does not put you completely asleep, but it does induce a greatly relaxed feeling. You won’t be very aware of what is going on around you.
  • General Anesthesia. With this strongest form of anesthesia, you are completely unconscious for your procedure.

Don’t let anxiety put your dental health at risk! Sedation dentistry from David Rice DDS in Elgin will get you easily through any procedure. People from Bartlet, South Elgin, and Wayne come to us for comprehensie general and family dentistry. Call to schedule an appointment with us today!

Are Dental Implants For Real?

Posted on March 5, 2021

When an adult tooth is lost, it’s gone for good. But artificial teeth supported by dental implants from David Rice DDS in Elgin are a lifelike replacement option!

Dental implants are titanium posts that are placed in your jaw, where they fuse with the bone. They can support artificial teeth that look and function like the real thing. One implant can support one artificial tooth, while several can support a full dental arch.

Benefits

Supporting lifelike replacement teeth are one of the biggest benefits of dental implants. Your ability to bite and chew is virtually normal. And that’s to say nothing of your restored smile!

But implants do even more. When a tooth is lost the bone around it begins to deterioriate. In time that results in a sunken appearance in the face. Dental implants help to prevent that loss of bone mass.

Having an implant inserted into your jaw bone is, strictly speaking, a surgical procedure. Most patients breeze through it and are able to resume their usual activities by the next day. Post-procedure discomfort is usually mild and can be controlled with over-the-counter pain medication.

Dental implants from David Rice DDS in Elgin may sound too good to be true, but they are for real! We have placed them in patients in Bartlet, South Elgin, and Wayne. We also offer general and family dentistry services. Please give us a call to schedule an appointment today!

Is Your Smile Holding You Back?

Posted on February 19, 2021

Wayne cosmetic smile makeover

In this post from David Rice DDS in Elgin, we begin with something we’d classify as Murphy’s Law.

You leave the house on a pressing errand, looking completely disheveled. Inevitably, you bump into someone you know. How do you feel in your ill-fitting sweatpants and stained T-shirt?

Attractive clothing, well-groomed hair, and a fit body boost morale for most people. But do you know what others notice first? Your face. Specifically, your smile and eyes. Study after study has shown that sensational teeth and eyes always capture attention.

Now, it’s difficult to change your eyes unless you get colored contacts. But beautiful smiles are within reach, because we can work miracles with cosmetic dentistry. We can turn ordinary smiles into stunning first-impressions.

Cosmetic Dentistry Options

Available cosmetic dentistry procedures include:

  • Teeth whitening. We can transform your smile from dull to dazzling.
  • Porcelain veneers. Cover chips, cracks, and other tooth imperfections.
  • Dental implants. Replace missing teeth with state-of-the-art implants that look and function like natural teeth.

If you are not satisfied with your smile, cosmetic dentistry from David Rice DDS in Elgin can help. Patients from Bartlet, South Elgin, and Wayne also come to us for complete general and family dentistry services. Call to find out what we can do for your smile!

Spotlight-Ready Smiles

Posted on February 12, 2021

what are dental implants

A mouth full of unattractive teeth can distract from anyone’s appearance. But a spotlight-ready smile, like what you can get with cosmetic dentistry from David Rice DDS in Elgin, can bring you increased satisfaction and confidence in your social interactions.

Cosmetic dentistry is that branch of  dental science that creates positive changes to your teeth and your smile. We believe that cosmetic dentistry should enhance the overall dental health of our patients.

Some of the most popular procedures include:

  • Porcelain veneers. Veneers are paper-thin shells of durable material (ceramic, porcelain, or composite resin) bonded to the teeth to provide strength and add beauty to any smile.
  • Dental implants. Dental implants are titanium posts that are implanted into the jaw, where they act as replacement roots to missing teeth. One implant can support an artificial tooth, while a group can support dentures.
  • Teeth whitening. Who doesn’t want whiter teeth? Professional teeth whitening can brighten your smile far better than any product you’ll find at the store, giving you a brilliant smile.

These are just some of the cosmetic dentistry procedures at David Rice DDS in Elgin that transform smiles every day. People from Bartlet, South Elgin, and Wayne also come to our practice for restorative dentistry, and many other services. Schedule your next checkup with us today!

    • Dr. Rice, Just a few words to let you know how my dental visit was. This was my first visit with Dr. Rice, and staff. I was a bit apprehensive, but soon found out about there professional way in which I was not only treated, but I also found out, how much they cared about my personal health. Dr. Rice ever so calm, and understanding about your fear. If I have to do it over and choose a Dentist, or suggest to a friend, it would be Dr. Rice. He followed up with a phone call that evening, of my extraction of a wisdom tooth, and was concerned. For that I thank you! I hope I will not need him for anything in the near future, but his phone# is now in my memory dial. Regards, J.E. Small A 5 star Rating

    • I’ve heard about oral sedation and had no idea how relaxed I’d be but really don’t remember anything other than sitting down in the chair. When they told me I was through, I felt so refreshed like I’d just finished a great nap.

    • When my daughter told me I could nap while I had all the dental work I needed done, I thought she was teasing! Dr. Rice has proven to me that dental visits can be relaxing and I’m so glad I found him. I have two new bridges and porcelain crowns and feel like I look twenty years younger!

    • I’m not fearful when it comes to dentistry, but my schedule doesn’t allow much time out of the office. Dr. Rice suggested oral sedation so we could combine several appointments into one, which worked out great. I wasn’t fatigued or drained at all after a 6 hour appointment and was thrilled with the results!

    • I thought I’d never get over the trauma of having painful dental treatment as a teen. My teeth were in horrible shape and I couldn’t even bring myself to make an appointment. When I learned Dr. Rice could do my dentistry while I had twilight sleep, I at least wanted to talk to him. That’s all it took. He’s so kind and I immediately knew he would be the one who could help me get over my fears. Now, I’m so much better. Looking back, it all seems so silly but all I know is that my smile looks a million times better!

    • The best thing about I.V. sedation is not remembering anything about my dental visit. After years of dreading everything about dental visits, Dr. Rice finally gave me a way to be there without even knowing it! My smile looks great now and I feel better knowing my mouth is finally healthy.

Oral hygienists working in his practice routinely share the results of the newest studies in dental care. Dr. Rice has been my dentist for 22 years. • I have been a patient of Dr. Rice for 15 years or more and find him and his staff to be excellent with their skill and chair-side manner. I never feel pressured to purchase services/treatments, that said it is their obligation to advise me on what is available. I feel that people need to remember that...just because the doctor tells you about options and how much those options cost does not mean they are trying to take advantage of you or trying to upsell you. I have never felt a hard sell approach from anyone in the office for anything. I have referred people to doctor Rice and will continue to do so because of his top notch dental care and his educational approach to dentistry.
