For most people, wisdom teeth appear in their late teens or early twenties. Often called “third molars,” they are not necessary and can even cause problems. At David A. Rice DDS in Elgin, we extract wisdom teeth on a regular basis.
What kind of problems can they cause? Wisdom teeth can damage adjacent teeth and nerves. Their awkward positioning can increase risk of cavities and gum disease.
Additionally, they often come in crooked, crowding the other teeth and affecting the bite.
Because they are so far backin the jaw, wisdom teeth are also difficult to clean, especially if they don’t come in all the way. This can cause an infection, as bacteria can be trapped under the skin where brushing and flossing is difficult.
