I.V. Conscious Sedation Pre-Appointment Instructions

As we have discussed during your consultation; the following instructions are to be followed before your appointment for I.V. Sedation.

Medications and Health

If you have had a change in your medical health, or if you are taking any new medications, please let us know before your appointment. Continue taking all medications that your physician has prescribed.  Only modify those medications that we discussed.

Smoking Tobacco

If you smoke, try to stop or at least curtail it for at least one week before your appointment. This will help keep your lungs cleaner and decrease the mucous in your throat. Nicotine studies have proven to dramatically slowdown the healing process.

THC

If you use THC please refrain from using it three days prior to your sedation. It can interact with the sedation making it less effective.

Alcohol

Do not drink any alcohol 3 days before your appointment.

Eating

Do not eat 6 hours prior to your appointment.

Hydrating  START drinking at:            STOP:

It is extremely important to hydrate (with 16-32 oz. water) up to 4 hours prior to your scheduled appointment.  At the 4 hour mark, do not drink any more.  Take any medications necessary within that last 4 hour time frame with minimal water.

Clothing

Please wear loose comfortable clothing. A short sleeve shirt is highly recommended.

Incontinence

Sedation of any form may cause drug-induced urinary incontinence. We will have you empty your bladder prior to your procedure. You may elect to wear protection such as Depends diapers/undergarments for extra caution.

Escort

You must come to your appointment with an escort. This adult will be responsible to take you home.  You are not allowed to drive or operate heavy machinery for 24 hours.

Finally, RELAX. Just think how comfortable you will be when your appointment is over. Your mouth will feel wonderful and so will the rest of you.  If possible, clear your schedule for at least 48 hours to allow yourself plenty of time to rest and drink fluids to flush out all the sedation medications. If you have any questions please call us at 847/741-2353 J
