For millions of people, the mere thought of going to the dentist sends their anxiety level through the roof. This emotion can range from anxiety to outright phobia, and can be so intense that some people avoid the dentist entirely. At David Rice DDS in Elgin, we can help with sedation dentistry.
To be blunt, skipping the dentist due to fear is a bad idea. If you don’t see the dentist for regular checkups, you are putting your dental health at risk. Healthy teeth and gums are important at every stage of life, and study after study has shown the link between your dental health and your overall health.
There are a lot of reasons people stress out just thinking about the dentist. For some, it may stem from a prior bad experience. Fear of pain may be involved, as well as a fear of anesthesics and possible side effects.
Whatever the reason, sedation dentistry has helped millions of people get the treatment they deserve. We offer four types:
- Nitrous Oxide. Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide has been used in dentistry for more than a hundred years and is highly effective. It works quickly and wears off quickly.
- Oral conscious sedation. You take a prescribed sedative an hour or so before the appointment. It puts you in a deeply relaxed state, though you remain conscious. When the appointment is over, someone will have to drive you home.
- IV Sedation. As the name implies, this is administered intravenously. It is a powerful sedative and you’ll need a ride to and from our office.
- General Anesthesia. Our strongest option, you are completely under and monitored throughout the procedure. You need an escort.
At David Rice DDS in Elgin, we want our patients to have a positive experience. If you cope with anxiety or phobia, ask about sedation dentistry. People from Bartlet, South Elgin, and Wayne come to our practice for general and family dentistry. Call to schedule an appointment today!
