Gum disease is a progressive condition that, left unchecked, can result in the loss of some or even all of your teeth. It is also a treatable condition, at David Rice DDS in Elgin.
Formally called periodontal disease, it attacks the tissue that support your teeth. In its milder form it is called gingivitis. According to the American Academy of Periodontology, three of every four adults in the United States have some stage of gum disease.
The Good News
As foreboding as this may sound, the news isn’t all bad. Gum disease is completely preventable with regular brushing and flossing, and regular dental checkups.
Gum disease is caused by plaque, that filmy stuff that forms on teeth. Plaque is loaded with the bacteria that causes gum disease. Daily brushing and flossing removes most of it. The plaque in hard-to-reach places hardens into tartar, which can only be removed by a professional cleaning. That’s what makes regular checkups so important.
At David Rice DDS in Elgin we can treat gum disease. We see people from throughout Bartlet, South Elgin, and Wayne, who also to come our practice for general and family dentistry. Please call our office to schedule a cleaning and checkup today!
